Out of Focus at the Saatchi gallery shows off the work of Google Photography Prize Finalists

Viktor Johansson?s photography documents the training sessions of Swedish 10-metre diver, Christoffer Eskilsson.

Exhibition: Out of Focus, Saatchi Gallery, London, until 22 July 2012

In an age where the internet has made it easy for anyone to become a published photographer, Saatchi gallery?s new exhibition explores the increasingly blurred line between the amateur and the professional.

Out of Focus showcases the work of the ten finalists of Google?s student Photography Prize, including that of winner, Viktor Johansson.

Their work is exhibited alongside pieces by 38 renowned photographers that have been selected by the gallery.

By allowing visitors to enjoy all these images in the same space, the display attempts to upturn traditional notions of what constitutes a ?professional?. It also pays testament to the wide range of different approaches that are being utilised in the practice today.

From classic documentary photography to the reworking of found images, from the capturing of collaborative performances to three-dimensional photographic assemblages, the display offers an encompassing view of the creativity the medium can offer.

Johansson?s winning entry documents the training sessions of the promising Swedish 10-metre diver, Christoffer Eskilsson.

?Viktor Johansson has chosen to show us an alternative view, one that we are not used to seeing from sport photography in the media,? says Saatchi Gallery CEO, Nigel Hurst who was on the judging panel.

?Instead of glamorous action shots of an athlete in competition, he has produced arresting and unexpected photographs that focus on the long, lonely hours of repetitive training and practice that it takes to excel in your field.?

  • Open daily 10am-6pm.
    Admission free.
